Students in SU’s Disabilities Studies program recently published a new monograph, “Building Pedagogical Curb Cuts: Incorporating Disability in the University Classroom and Curriculum.” The editors and major contributors are leaders of the Beyond Compliance Coordinating Committee. The book, which reflects the mission of the group, is remarkable because it was conceived and created entirely by students. The new book recognizes that compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other anti-discrimination laws is important, but that often those measures do not go far enough to ensure that universities acknowledge and value the contributions of all students, including students with disabilities.
We are pleased to announce the upcoming "Soul of Syracuse" event, Family Matters: Honoring the Contributions of Families of People with Disabilities on Wednesday, June 8th. This public forum will review the contributions of family members in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and discuss the challenges ahead in ensuring the right of all children and adults with disabilities to participate in school and community life. Awards will be presented to Central New York family members and leaders who have improved our community through their advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities
