EDITORIAL POLICY

INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (IDD)

About The Journal

Editor: Steven J. Taylor, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) is among the top journals in special education, rehabilitation, and disability studies. It is a journal of policy, practices, and perspectives for professionals and families interested in intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is dedicated to meeting the information needs of those who seek effective ways to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The journal reports on policy developments and trends, program and practice evaluations, surveys, empirical studies, and philosophical and historical treatises. Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is a peer-reviewed journal whose consulting editors represent a broad spectrum of settings: universities, research centers, public bodies and human service and advocacy agencies.

Internet-Based Submission of Manuscripts
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities uses a new Internet/web-based manuscript submission and peer-review system called AllenTrack. AllenTrack is an on-line software system available that helps manuscripts flow seamlessly into the typesetting process. AllenTrack assists with basic editorial office tracking functions and review correspondence that typically requires considerable clerical effort. The system makes the publishing process more efficient, accommodating, and accessible to authors and reviewers all over the world. Authors who do not use the Internet can submit manuscripts directly to the Editor.

Editorial Information for Authors: Articles

Review Process and Editorial Decision
Articles submitted to IDD are subject to review by at least two and usually three anonymous reviewers selected by the Editor or Associate Editor. The review process is usually completed within 3 months of receipt of the manuscript. IDD strives toward fairness and courteousness in the review process.

Criteria for Acceptance
Articles are judged on relevance to policy or practice, potential reader interest, originality, and clarity of writing. Research articles are reviewed based on standards appropriate to the methodology used in the study. Other articles are reviewed according to scholarly or literary standards. Authors should address the implications of their articles for policy and practice, if not apparent.

Style
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities adheres to the 2001 Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 5th edition). Manuscripts should be double-spaced on 81/2" x 11" paper, with at least 1-inch margins on all sides. An abstract of no more than 120 words should be included. References should be typed double-spaced on a separate page. Articles should not exceed 20 pages in length, including references. Authors are encouraged to submit shorter manuscripts. Because articles are reviewed anonymously, the author's name and other identifying information should appear only on the cover page.

Submissions
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to http://idd.allentrack.net. All manuscripts are peer-reviewed, so potential identifying information should be removed prior to submission. A letter of submission stating that the manuscript is not under review by any other journal should also be submitted. Corresponding authors who require assistance in submitting their manuscripts through AllenTrack should contact the editorial office via phone, 315-443-3851; fax, 315-443-4338; or e-mail: iddaaidd@syr.edu. Authors who choose not to submit their manuscript through AllenTrack may send it as an e-mail attachment to iddaaidd@syr.edu or on diskette to Steven J. Taylor, Ph.D., Center on Human Policy, Syracuse University, 805 S. Crouse Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13244-2280. AllenTrack is able to convert most word processing files (e.g., Word, WordPerfect, text, PostScript, and Rich Text Format).

Editorial Information for Authors: Perspectives

Editorial Decision
Commentaries are published in Perspectives. IDD welcomes thoughtful, well-reasoned, interesting, clearly written contributions. Submissions are reviewed by the Editor and Perspectives Editors, who will make editorial decisions usually within a month after receipt of the manuscript. Detailed comments are not provided for manuscripts not accepted for publication in Perspectives

Style
Commentaries should not exceed 5 pages. An abstract is not necessary.

Submission
Perspectives
submissions are also managed using the AllenTrack system. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to http://idd.allentrack.net. A cover letter should clearly state that the manuscript is being submitted to Perspectives and advise the editor if the submission is under review or has been published by any other journal.

Editorial Policy

Language
IDD adheres to AAIDD policy regarding the use of "people first language." Authors should use language that emphasizes the humanity of people with disabilities. Generic descriptive terms such as people, participants, students, children, and adults are preferred over subjects or informants. Language should be free of gender bias. He should not be used generically to refer to persons of both genders.

Copyright Assignment
In view of the Copyright Revision Act of 1976, if a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author(s) must sign a Copyright Assignment and Agreement conveying all copyright ownership, including electronic rights, to AAIDD. Permission to reproduce copyrighted materials for classroom uses is granted.

Revisions and Corrections
The editor reserves the right to reject manuscripts that do not meet the standards contained in this editorial policy and to make editorial changes in accepted articles that do not alter the meaning of the text.

Accepted Manuscripts
Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the remainder of the production process is coordinated by the Senior Editor. Authors do not receive galleys. Any changes must be made on the copy-edited manuscript, which will be received from the Senior Editor before the paper goes to the printer. For technical questions, contact Yvette Taylor, 561-482-0341, Email: Ytaaidd@aol.com.

Data-Sharing Policy of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
It is the policy of AAIDD that any author publishing a professional paper in an AAIDD journal agrees to follow APA guidelines with respect to sharing of raw data.

Specifically, the author(s) agree to retain raw data for at least 5 years following publication of a paper, and to provide others access to raw data if they receive a formal (written or email) request to provide the raw data needed to verify a published finding.

Note: Within this policy, authors are not obligated to provide raw data for use other than to verify analyses reported in a professional paper published in an AAIDD journal, and at no point is there an expectation that sharing of raw data would occur in a form that violated informed consent, privacy rights, or ethical standards associated with protection of human subjects.

If an author does not respond to a formal request for raw data within a three-month period, it is appropriate for the person making the request to contact the editor of the AAIDD journal that published the initial paper and for the editor to contact the author(s) and clarify AAIDD policy.

If after three months from contact by the editor, the author(s) continues to withhold raw data requested for verification, then the journal editor may notify all authors of the article in question that for a period of three years, no manuscript will be considered for acceptance in that AAIDD journal that includes them as a co-author. The journal editor will notify the AAIDD Board President, AAIDD Executive Director, other AAIDD journal editor(s) and AAIDD Publications Committee Chair prior to notifying the authors.
