September 18 is National GearUp Day

Mayoral Candidate Miner speaks to juniors at Henninger High school

Stephanie MinerOn Friday, September 18, 2009, five Syracuse City high schools will recognize National GearUp Day.  Locally, the highlights of the day will include: GearUp Cakes, notes of thanks, and information about Gear Up programs will be in teachers’ lounges at each of the five GearUp schools (Corcoran, Nottingham, Fowler, Henninger and the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central); Syracuse University admissions will meet with students and distribute information to students in the Nottingham GearUp block; and Stephanie Miner, Democratic candidate for Syracuse Mayor, will talking about the value of education to juniors at Henninger school from 2-3 p.m.

The GearUp (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) grants were developed in 1998 by the Higher Education Act to increase the amount of students prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education; GearUp programs now exist in 47 states and three territories.  Syracuse University hosts two GearUp programs: SU GearUp for current 9th and 10th grade students in Syracuse City High Schools and NY GearUp for the 11th grade class.  Each cohort will receive academic support through graduation.

New York GearUp is provided by the School of Education at Syracuse University and is funded by the New York Higher Education Services Corp.

“At NY GearUp, we believe that to prepare our cohort for college, both students and their families must see the students in college,” says program Director Marissa Mims.  “Therefore our programs include a strong component of parent workshops.”

NY GearUp prepares students for college through a variety of activities including STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programming, summer college, mentoring, English as a second language activities and writing programs. Programming includes the coordination of college visits for students and parents in addition to assistance with institutional, financial, and scholarship applications.
