Summer College for High School Students provides introduction to teaching adolescent literature

A group of students studies togetherThe School of Education begins its two week Summer College for High School Students course today, August 3, 2009.  Marcelle Haddix, assistant professor of reading & language arts has been working with Syracuse University University College to develop the School of Education’s program offering in “Teaching Children’s and Adolescent Literature.”  From 9 am – 4 pm each day, the 13 enrolled students will explore children’s and adolescent literature by reading fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and short stories written for and by youth in traditional, print-based texts, as well as digitally and visually based texts such as online fanfiction and graphic novels.  In addition to classroom discussions and critical examination of texts, the program will feature guest author talks and field trips to various community sites including local libraries, theaters, museums, and youth centers.  The program culminates in the showcase of students’ work in two special events, a poetry slam on Friday, August 7 at 1:00 pm (location TBA), and a multimedia teaching exhibition at Nottingham High School Library on Friday, August 14 at 1:00 pm..  Both events are open to the community.

Summer College for High School Students at Syracuse University offers credit and non credit academic programs that allow students to explore their college options before graduating from high school.  Students had the opportunity to choose from 8 six-week courses or from four two-week courses, including Education. Each program is designed to give students a realistic view of undergraduate coursework in their field of interest.
