HEOP student Shaquana Gardner featured in NY Daily News article

HEOP student Shaquana Gardner was featured in a July 15 NY Daily News article for her invitation to meet President Obama at that evening’s NAACP gala in New York City.  Gardner penned an essay about being a first generation college student for a scholarship competition from a lower east side not-for-profit organization, where she resides; that was so inspirational it led to the special invitation to the gala event. Gardner is a rising junior in the Political Science program at Syracuse. She is a member of the Writer's Guild, a program formed by the Office of Supportive Services to encourage and support professional writing.  She works closely with her HEOP counselor, Dave Peterson.

The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is housed within the School of Education, and serves 222 undergraduate students from the 9 schools and colleges of Syracuse University. HEOP is a program for New York State residents that provides educational opportunity and academic support to students with strong academic potential and personal initiative who would otherwise be excluded from higher education due to circumstances of academic and economic disadvantage.
