Syracuse Urban Inclusive Teacher Residents (SUITR): Special Education Generalist, grades 7-12

The Clinically Rich Teacher Preparation Pilot Program:
Through a partnership with Hughes (middle school) and William Nottingham High School, Syracuse University’s School of Education will develop, implement, and test its new 7-12 Inclusive Special Education (Generalist) Master’s program. The intent is to create a successful and replicable model for the preparation and induction of highly qualified and motivated teachers into high needs urban secondary schools. Teacher residents will earn a stipend for their fieldwork and get a significant tuition reduction.
Syracuse Urban Inclusive Teacher Residents (SUITRs) will spend 8.5 months urban teacher residency linking theory into their daily practice, augmented by the real time mentoring of a team of special educators and content teachers. This clinically rich teacher preparation program aims to better prepare candidates to meet the critical teacher shortage in secondary (7-12) special education, and maximize their retention as effective teachers in high needs schools.
Another objective of the program is for the collaboration between Syracuse University and its partnership schools to positively impact the quality of teaching and student achievement, as well as to support teacher retention in those schools. In addition, this program is built on the assumption that students with disabilities must have access to academic instruction and social learning that is available to all students.
