Field Placements

From the first or second semester of entering one of the twenty-five teacher preparation programs, students engage in a series of progressively more intense field placements, requiring substantial commitments of time, care, and effort to the learning and development of thousands of infants, young children and adolescents in the Syracuse area. In the calender year of 2000, the 550 undergraduates and 225 masters students in our teacher preparation programs engaged in student teaching, internships, in-school tutoring, art workshops, and out-of-school respite care totaling (conservatively) over 122,000 hours of service.

Students in the Inclusive Elementary and Special Education program engage in a total of ten field placements, and students in our other preparation programs in at least five or six placements, over the course of their programs. Each placement is linked to an on-campus course or seminar, where issues related to field placements are analyzed and discussed.
