ICI Training

The Institute on Communication and Inclusion provides this continuum of training through workshops, monthly skill building sessions, and an annual summer institute. Additionally, the Institute provides referral to trainers for assessments, individual skill building consultations and technical assistance.

Check out Calendar for upcoming events both in Syracuse and around the country, and contact us for more information about hosting a workshop or other session in your area.

  • Introductory Workshops: A 2-day, learn-by-doing workshop for people new to communication assistance. The goal is to better understand assistive communication methods, standards, practices, and ethics through dialogue, role-playing, and simulations. Workshops are held once or twice a year in Syracuse, and can be held elsewhere upon request. It is not necessary to be working directly with an established augmentative communication user or potential candidate to attend this workshop, although they are welcome.
  • Skill Building Workshops: For experienced assisted communication users and their facilitators, to work towards open communication and independence. Skill Building Saturdays are held in Syracuse once a week, and similar workshops can be held in other locations upon request.
  • Training of Trainers: Combines advanced instruction in the research and theory of supported typing with the opportunity to work directly with communciation aid users and their families. If you are already a proficient facilitator with at least one year of experience and are interested in teaching others about the method, you may be interested in developing yourself as a Communication Coach or Trainer.  A trainer is able to get others started with supprted typing, as well as give group instruction, organize and teach workshops. Workshops are offered annually.
  • ICI Summer Institute: Every other Summer, the ICI holds a Summer Institute at Syracuse University, or near another partner organization. The Institute is a chance for typers to strengthen their skills, meet and connect with other typers and facilitators, and brings national and international speakers and workshops to participate in and experience.
