My crazy days are a lot of work and stress, but if I didn't love everything I do, I wouldn't do it. – Melissa Shakun '05 Remembrance Scholar

For 100 years, Syracuse University's School of Education has prepared scholars from around the world for demanding, rewarding careers in education. The School offers a wide variety of degree programs in both teaching and non-teaching areas.

Whether your interest is to become a grade school teacher, an expert in special education or to pursue a graduate degree, the staff in the School of Education are looking forward to helping you get started.

The following pages have been designed to provide you with the details you'll need to apply for admission to the School of Education. If you can't find exactly what you're looking for here, you'll also find a number of contacts and references that will help you get the information you need.

Emphasizing a solid foundation in the liberal arts as well as in education, each degree program is flexible enough to accommodate your personal and professional needs.

Our Teacher Preparation programs will prepare you to teach in pre-K through grade 12 schools in a variety of subjects and disciplines. You can pursue one of our highly regarded professional preparation programs in Exercise Science. A significant strength of all of our undergraduate programs is the opportunity to practice your developing skills in multiple "real world" classroom and clinical settings. Our programs offer you field-based experiences in local school districts, on-campus clinics, community agencies, and in on and off-campus early childhood centers. In our teacher preparation programs often you begin your field placements in your first year and complete more field experiences than you would at most other colleges and Universities.

Our teacher preparation program in inclusive elementary and special education is one of the few university curricula throughout the nation that truly integrates "regular" and special education. Our graduates are very knowledgeable about how to design and manage classroom settings in which children exhibit a wide range of learning abilities and disabilities. Your courses and various student field experiences provide the knowledge and skills you will need to successfully teach in today's culturally diverse and pluralistic schools.

Our Special Subject programs in Secondary Education programs along with Art and Music Education allow you to understand and practice the most recent research and developments in your chosen field. As early as the first year, you will begin a series of supervised field experiences and enroll in an academy of educators, a group of local school teachers and education professors that help form a gateway to your teaching career. Syracuse's College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education offer dual programs in English, mathematics, science, and social studies education that prepare you to teach in grades 7 through 12. The College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education offer joint programs in art education and music education that prepare you to teach pre-K through Grade 12. Our Physical Education curriculum prepares you for New York State provisional certification to teach physical education in grade pre-K-12. Your studies include a combination of Physical Education, Professional Education and Liberal Arts courses, as well as teaching and coaching field experiences.
