The Exercise Biochemistry Laboratory, located in Bowne Hall, is operated in collaboration with the Nutrition Department and is directed by Dr. Jill Kanaley. Much of this facility is dedicated to the processing of blood samples from endocrinological studies. Students associated with this lab have the ability to learn a wide variety of assays including:

  • Processing tissue and blood samples for data analysis
  • Performing "endpoint" assays of blood for cortisol, growth hormone, hematocrit, and catecholamine concentrations
  • Performing enzyme assays on skeletal muscle for lactate dehydrongenase, a glycolytic marker, and citrate synthetase, an oxidative marker

Tests conducted include:

  • Hormone assays: Quantitative analysis of hormone concentrations in plasma using RIA, IRMA, Plate reader and ELISA assays
  • Chemiluminescence: Quantitative analysis of 10 protocols using a Nichols Chemi-400 system
  • Blood lipid profiles: Cholestech full cholesterol panel
  • Glucose and blood lactate: Quantitative analysis of a full cholesterol panel using a YSI 2300 STAT plus
