Undergraduate Studies
The School of Education offers you a wide variety of degree programs in both teaching and non-teaching areas. Many of our programs lead to initial/professional teaching certification in New York State. Each degree program is flexible enough to accommodate your personal and professional needs, and provides a solid foundation in the liberal arts as well as in education.
Our Teacher Preparation Programs will prepare you to teach in pre-K through Grade 12 schools in a variety of subjects and disciplines. A significant strength of all of our undergraduate programs is the opportunity to practice your developing skills in many "real world" classroom and clinical settings. Our programs offer field-based experiences in local school districts, on-campus laboratories, community agencies, and in on- and off-campus early childhood centers. As a student in one of our teacher preparation programs, you'll begin your field placements as early as your first year and complete more field experiences than you would at most other colleges and universities.
Our Inclusive Elementary and Special Education program is the pioneer in the field, and is one of only a few throughout the nation that truly integrates "regular" and special education. Our graduates know how to design and manage classrooms in which children have a wide range of learning abilities and disabilities. Your courses and various student field experiences provide the knowledge and skills you will need to successfully teach in today's culturally diverse schools.
Our Special Subject programs in Secondary Education programs, along with Art and Music Education, allow you to understand and practice the most recent research and developments in your chosen field. As early as the first year, you will begin a series of supervised field experiences and will enroll in an academy of educators-a group of local schoolteachers and education professors-who will help form a gateway to your teaching career.
Syracuse University's School of Education and College of Arts and Sciences offer dual programs in English, mathematics, science, and social studies education that prepare you to teach in grades 7 through 12. The College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education offer joint programs in art education and music education that prepare you to teach pre-K through Grade 12.
Our Physical Education curriculum prepares you for New York State initial certification to teach physical education in pre-K through Grade 12. Your studies include a combination of Physical Education, Professional Education, and Liberal Arts courses, as well as teaching and coaching field experiences.
You can pursue one of our highly regarded professional preparation programs in Health and Exercise Science, which strives to promote the health and fitness benefits of physical activity through excellence in teaching, scholarship, and a commitment to professional service.
