Reading and Language Arts

The English Education Master's program integrates the candidate's knowledge of subject matter with an understanding of the processes involved in composition and responding to literature. At the doctoral level, such a focus is augmented by the student's own research in language learning and teaching. At both levels, English Education maintains a close tie with the Literacy Education program.

Historically, the Reading and Language Arts department has enjoyed cooperative relationships with area public schools, BOCES, and local companies that permit candidates to gain field experience and, where appropriate, conduct research in school and workplace settings. Master's programs in English education prepare participants for teaching positions in middle, junior, and senior high schools. A master's program is available for those with English but no education background seeking teacher certification (Preparation Program).

The Master's programs in Literacy Education prepare participants to be very effective classroom teachers, reading teachers, and reading specialists at the elementary and secondary levels.
