Syracuse University's Reading and Language Arts Center was established in 1948 and has since played a nationally recognized role in preparing classroom teachers, literacy specialists, learning disability specialists, curriculum designers, test designers, researchers, administrators, and college professors. Graduates of the English Education Master's, Literacy Education Master's, English Education Ph.D., and Reading Education Ph.D. programs are employed at schools and universities around the world, and many of them have achieved national distinction for their important contributions to our knowledge base, to our professional organizations, and to the development of innovative instructional and assessment programs.

Why Study With Us?

We find that students choose to study with us for a number of important reasons, among them:

  • The chance to study with nationally visible faculty members, who are providing ongoing leadership in their professional fields.
  • The offering of strong and cohesive teacher preparation curricula, including close study and critique of multiple theories and related practices.
  • A focus on developing understandings and skills for effectively addressing literacy development for a wide range of diverse learners.
  • Exceptional field placement opportunities with highly skilled host teachers and supervisors.
  • A high degree of personal support by full-time faculty members, advisors and field-based host teachers.
  • Outstanding employability after graduation.

The Center offers students the opportunity to develop expertise not only in the area of reading and language arts, but also in the areas of English education, learning disabilities, college learning strategies, children's literature, assessment and technology.

The Liberty Partnerships Program (SULPP) is a 12-month program funded by the New York State Education Department through the School of Education. It is designed to serve 200 middle grade students who are considered at risk of not graduating from high school. Services include tutoring, mentoring enrichment, community service, counseling, workforce preparation, and career awareness. These services are offered in after-school programs in the Syracuse City School District middle schools, the Dunbar Center, the Spanish Action League and in summer programming on the SU Campus. It utilizes paid staff and volunteers from campus and the community.

The Reading and Language Arts program is a close-knit community energized by a collective commitment to addressing and enhancing the literacy and learning of children and adults in schools and communities. The program's biggest strength is its graduates, who are making significant contributions in schools, professional and community organizations, and universities throughout the country and around the world.
