Faculty

  • Sandy Bargainnier Ed.D., Ed.D.
    Assistant Professor
    315-443-9699
    ssbargai@syr.edu

  • Scott R. Collier Ph.D.
    Assistant Professor
    315-443-9801
    sccollie@syr.edu

Scott's current research interests surround vascular remodeling and blood flow control associated with aerobic and resistance exercise training, along with identifying acute and chronic alterations in the autonomic nervous system under different environmental (i.e. orthostatic challenges) and pathological (i.e. Down Syndrome) situations. Current research projects include the effects of exercise mode on hemodynamic and vascular changes in a population with elevated blood pressure and the role of leptin in vascular remodeling and cell signaling in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

  • Keith DeRuisseau, Ph.D.
    Assistant Professor
    315-443-9776
    kcderuis@syr.edu
    Ph.D. Florida State University

In addition to teaching courses, advising graduate students and continuing his own research, Keith DeRuisseau will be responsible for setting up an exercise biochemistry lab in The Institute for Sensory Research on SU’s South Campus. Before coming to Syracuse, DeRuisseau was a post-doctoral associate in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology in the University of Florida’s Center for Exercise Science. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and his Ph.D. degree in movement sciences from Florida State University.

  • Timothy Fairchild, Ph.D.
    Assistant Professor
    315-443-2908
    tjfairch@syr.edu
Ph.D. University of Western Australia, 2005

Dr. Fairchild received his Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Western Australia for his work in the area of glycogen resynthesis following exercise. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Energy Metabolism, and Body Composition. His research interests focus on carbohydrate metabolism. His current research projects utilize Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to trace the fate of carbohydrates after either a bout of exercise or in response to the ingestion of carbohydrates. In order to perform the research projects, he collaborates with Professors from the Department of Chemistry at Syracuse University as well as Professors from the Department of Human Movement and Exercise Science at the University of Western Australia.

  • Jill Kanaley, Ph.D.
Associate Professor and Interim Department Chair
    315-443-9698
    jakanale@syr.edu
    Ph.D. University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, 1989

Dr. Kanaley earned her Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology with support areas of physiology and nutrition in 1989. She was previously a research associate at the University of Virginia 's Department of Internal Medicine, and also completed postdoctoral work with the Endocrine Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic. Her research interests focus on the endocrine and metabolic responses to exercise. She teaches graduate courses in exercise endocrinology, cardiovascular exercise physiology, and systemic exercise physiology. She has active projects on the effect of diet and exercise in Type 2 diabetics, the effect of exercise and ethnicity on regional body fat storage in post menopausal women, and the effects of exercise on GH responses.

    Ph.D. Ohio University, 1994

Lori Ploutz-Snyder, associate professor  and director of the Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory, is a specialist in exercise physiology. Her research centers on the role of skeletal muscle function in physical rehabilitation and aging. She has written numerous research articles and received many grants.
