The Master of Science in School Counseling
The Master of Science in School Counseling is a 48-credit program that is CACREP-accredited and prepares students for provisional certification as a K-12 School Counselor in New York State. It typically requires 2-3 years to complete. The program of study includes academic preparation, supervised laboratory experiences, and practicum and internship placements in regional schools. REQUIRED COURSES
In addition to courses specific to school counseling, students complete core courses that meet the curriculum requirements of CACREP. These required courses total 39 credits and include:

*The internship must be completed in an elementary, middle or high school setting.

The remaining credits in this program are electives. Students may choose courses offered by the Counseling and Human Services Department, or opt to take related courses outside of the department. CHS offers the following elective options:

To be eligible for New York State School Counselor Certification, students in the School Counseling program must also complete training in:

These requirements are met though on-line modules offered through the School of Education. Students complete the modules and must pass an exam that tests the content of all six modules.
