Counseling and Human Services

The Master of Science in School Counseling is a 48-credit program that is CACREP-accredited and prepares students for provisional certification as a K-12 School Counselor in New York State. Students are encouraged to complete clinical experiences in at least two levels of schools (elementary, middle, or high school) in order to give them exposure to children at different developmental levels. School counseling students are also encouraged to complete clinical experiences in both urban and non-urban schools. Finally, graduates of the School Counseling program are prepared to offer future employers their expertise in comprehensive developmental school counseling programming, thus reflecting the highest national standards in the profession.

Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a 60-credit program that prepares students for employment in a variety of human service venues including community mental health counseling, career counseling, substance abuse counseling, counseling with youth, crisis counseling, and counseling persons who have experienced domestic violence. The program of study consists of core counseling courses, specialized courses appropriate to prepare the students to work in community agencies, and clinical experiences in community counseling settings. Students graduate from this program as license-eligible and apply for a limited permit to practice mental health counseling in New York, leading to licensure as an LMHC.

Master's in Student Affairs Counseling

The Master of Science in Student Affairs Counseling is a 48-credit hour master's degree program that emphasizes preparation as a professional counselor for those roles within college and university student affairs offices for which counseling skills are valuable. Students and graduates of the program work in settings such as university career centers, campus substance abuse programs and rape crisis centers, multicultural and international students' offices, residence life, and the judicial office.

Certificate of Advanced Study in School Counseling

The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) allows students to complete the educational requirements for permanent school counselor certification in New York state. The CAS is appropriate both for students with a Master's in school counseling and for students who have a Master's in another specialty within counseling but wish to pursue N.Y. state certification as a school counselor.

Doctoral Program in Counselor Education and Supervision

The Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision is a CACREP-accredited program designed primarily to prepare graduates for academic positions in Counselor Education or Rehabilitation Counselor Education. Recent graduates of the doctoral program have accepted faculty positions in other accredited counseling programs, clinical and supervisory positions in university counseling centers, or senior positions in a variety of educational and mental health settings.
