What do I need to apply?

  • Graduate teacher preparation and school leadership candidates must submit:
    • Competitive scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Miller Analogy Test (MAT), or other acceptable, nationally normed admissions examination.
    • Cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0.
    • Personal essay demonstrating candidates’ beliefs about student learning, commitment to diversity, enthusiasm for learning, willingness to foster collaboration, and ethics.
  • Interview recommended (Telephone interviews accepted)
  • A portfolio review, in person, digital or emailed
  • Strong teacher and/or employer recommendations
  • TOEFL is required for all applicants whose native language is not English


  • A bachelor's degree from an institution recognized by Syracuse University
  • An undergraduate major in a visual arts area
  • At least nine credits in one of the following areas: art history, two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, or time-based art
  • At least one college-level course in the humanities
  • At least one college-level course in the social sciences
  • At least one college-level writing course
  • At least one college-level mathematics course
  • At least one college-level science course
  • High school level III foreign language or one year of college language

In order to be eligible for New York State teacher certification, students must also complete a number of liberal arts prerequisites, including the following:

  • A course with emphasis on artistic expression, or significant recent participation in the arts
  • A course that has a historical focus
  • A social science course other than history or psychology
  • A college-level mathematics course
  • A college-level science course
  • Study of a language other than English (including American Sign Language) through the first year of college study or equivalent, met through appropriate college or high school (Level III) courses.

Individuals who lack a prerequisite course, or need additional study, can sometimes arrange to meet these requirements during the program, instead of prior to admission.

Application deadline

The deadline for applications to the Art Education Professional Certification M.S. is January 15 to coincide with the application deadline for School of Education scholarships. Qualified applicants will be considered for admission on a rolling basis after this date if space is available.
