M.S. in Literacy Education (Birth-Grade 12)
Syracuse University's 30-credit master's program in Literacy Education, Birth to Grade 12, reflects the latest thinking about literacy instruction. The program aligns with the professional standards of the International Reading Association and the New York State Teaching and Learning Standards. Through face-to-face instruction, online experiences, and community-based projects, you will learn to provide culturally responsive literacy instruction in classrooms and in school-wide programs in which all students are helped to learn at high levels. The Literacy Education Birth to Grade 12 program prepares you for a range of jobs in the field of literacy education. Our graduates become outstanding classroom teachers, literacy specialists, and literacy coaches; with additional preparation, some become faculty members in higher education, school administrators, state department administrators, professional development providers, and language arts consultants.
Why Literacy Education?
You can become a better classroom literacy teacher and be eligible to earn two new teaching certificates (Birth to Grade 6 & Grades 5-12) in as little as one year of full-time study .
Full- and some part-time students can receive extra scholarship support through SU’s School of Education if you choose to study in this important area.
Small student cohorts mean you get to know your teachers and peers who will become your lifelong colleagues.
Tenure-track faculty members teach our courses, which means that you will have excellent teachers who will share cutting-edge best practices in all your classes.
You will gain teaching experience with children and youth from diverse backgrounds in a wide range of in- and out-of-school settings.
You will develop expertise and confidence as a literacy coach and leader who can work with colleagues to promote literacy at the building level.
Most graduates of our program serve as classroom teachers or literacy specialists in middle or high schools. Alumni are teaching or have recently taught in countries such as England, Canada, Spain, Bahamas, and Thailand, as well as in Washington DC, Puerto Rico, and 40 states in the U.S. from Alaska to Florida and from Hawaii to Delaware.
