If we presume students intelligent and wanting to engage with the world, our job is to create conditions where we can observe this. - Dean Douglas Biklen

Dean's Message

Welcome to the Syracuse University School of Education Web Site

Our legacy, established over the last 100 years, is one of identifying tough problems in education then tackling them head on, linking research to practice and bringing what we've learned from inquiry to our teaching.

Our reputation is based on looking for new and better approaches and techniques in education—not just here in Syracuse, but in New York City, through Syracuse University's centers abroad (especially London, Florence, and Beijing), and with research and training projects in Asia, Australia, Latin America and Africa. As a result, the School of Education enjoys international recognition.

We offer undergraduates a broad range of programs in Inclusive Elementary and Special Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, Social Studies Education, Physical Education, Art Education, Music Education, and Exercise Science. However, the true value-added for our students is the knowledge and experience our professors bring from their "real-world" research to the classroom and the almost unlimited opportunities available for our students to take part in practicum placements, where they can try out what they have learned in University classes.

We offer graduate students more as well. Syracuse is among the first schools of education to develop a comprehensive sequence of courses in qualitative research, alongside quantitative methods, historical research, survey methods and other approaches to inquiry. Today, graduate students in all of our programs, in such diverse fields as counseling, instructional design, higher education, and foundations, study research methods side by side.

As proud as we are of our accomplishments, we haven't achieved them alone; working with partners is one of our core values. The School's long and collegial partnership with the Syracuse City School District resulted in their establishing inclusive classrooms; that, in turn, led to our being the first major research university to offer an inclusive teacher preparation program for undergraduates.

Since its inception in 1906, the School of Education has been at the cutting edge of change and innovation. We encourage you to join us as we celebrate a century of exploration and to participate with us in addressing issues and seeking solutions that can define the future of education in America and around the world.
